El papel histórico de los afrodescendientes es un tema obligado para quienes abordan el estudio de los procesos históricos que se desarrollaron en el suroccidente colombiano. En esta región, la población de origen africano fue y sigue siendo la minoría más grande en términos absolutos, mientras que en alguna época fue la mayoritaria, cuando algunos formaban parte de los -libres de todos los colores-. En el presente libro se presentan una serie de artículos y ensayos históricos que han sido discutidos en diferentes eventos, algunos asociados a la conmemoración de la Independencia; y otros relacionados con los aportes de esta población al desarrollo del suroccidente.
