El cemento Portland, llamado así por su color gris parecido al de las piedras de la isla de Portland, al sur de Inglaterra, y su hormigón forman parte de nuestras vidas. Con ellos se ha construido seguramente el edificio en el que vivimos; los centros de salud y hospitales; las carreteras, puentes, aceras y calles; las presas, canalizaciones de agua, sistemas de saneamiento y depuración… Pocos materiales han tenido tanta influencia en el desarrollo de las sociedades en el último siglo (el cemento Portland es el segundo producto más empleado por el ser humano después del agua).
Ambos son materiales de construcción de larga duración y resistentes frente a condiciones ambientales severas y desastres naturales. Sin embargo, ¿sabemos qué diferencia hay entre ellos? ¿Qué materiales de construcción antiguos se utilizaban antes de su invención y desarrollo (como los hormigones romanos)? ¿Cómo se ha llegado al desarrollo de ambos? ¿Qué repercusión tienen en el medioambiente? ¿Qué innovaciones se esperan para hacerlos materiales más sostenibles y con menor huella de carbono en un futuro cercano?
