El antiesclavismo en España y sus adversarios
En la era de la abolición, la esclavitud prosperó en las colonias españolas con un empuje desconocido. En torno a ochocientos mil africanos esclavizados fueron llevados a Cuba y Puerto Rico entre 1790 y 1866. Esa segunda esclavitudauspició la formación de capitales, la creación de redes mercantiles transnacionales y la captación de remesas fiscales por la Hacienda Pública. Las ideas abolicionistas, anunciadas en las Cortes en 1811, encontraron un clima favorable en la sociedad y en el Parlamento después de 1868. La supresión del comercio atlántico de esclavos y la ley de “vientres libres” fueron medidas pospuestas hasta finales del siglo XIX. En 1886 se puso fin a la esclavitud en Cuba y, con ello, en el Reino de España.
