Ezequiel Martínez Estrada fue uno de los más grandes escritores de la Argentina y a través de sus ensayos, intentó descifrar al país. Siguiendo las huellas de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento y Juan Bautista Alberdi, encaró la tarea de fijar una teoría del fracaso argentino. Justamente por ello se lo consideró un pesimista, un escéptico, un resentido, un soberbio. Intentaba demostrar que la dialéctica maniquea civilización–barbarie, pueblo–oligarquía que restauraban el revisionismo histórico y luego el peronismo, no resolvía la crisis del país.
Como vemos, se trata de un escritor que hoy llamaríamos “maldito”, que no encajaba en los bandos en disputa, en un país donde la no coincidencia con los sectores políticos e ideológicos enfrentados significa la muerte civil.
