El hospital psiquiátrico de mujeres J. A. Esteves, de Lomas de Zamora, en Buenos Aires, atendió, durante todo el siglo XX, a pacientes de bajos recursos con cuadros psiquiátricos más o menos agudos, la mitad de ellas extranjeras y muchas sin conocimientos de español. Un importante número de ellas fueron internadas allí hasta su fallecimiento. Apoyándose principalmente en el análisis de las historias clínicas de la institución, el libro se centra en el estudio de los diagnósticos de demencia precoz y la esquizofrenia. A través de un riguroso análisis de las formas de interpretar y tratar las patologías psiquiátricas en el Buenos Aires entre 1908 y 1971, Alejandra Golcman muestra que la mirada, interpretaciones y acciones terapéuticas de los psiquiatras estuvieron permeadas por un entorno social y cultural que modificó su desempeño profesional.
