En Filosofía, la tradición de los dubitativos comienza con los escépticos de la antigüedad griega y continúa con la duda metódica como virtud científica. También en la Biblia aparecen grandes dubitativos, como Abrahán, Jacob, Job o el apóstol Tomás, prototipo del que duda. La duda no aleja del Evangelio, sino que es la condición de una fe auténtica. El verdadero sabio no es el que sabe, sino el que duda del saber que ha aprendido o adquirido. Vinculando la duda con la tolerancia y desde la perspectiva del diálogo interreligioso, el autor también presenta la historia medieval de tres reyes magos, que representan las tres religiones monoteístas, que se encuentran con un cuarto sabio (pagano), y el caso de Miguel Servet, el hereje quemado en la hoguera en Ginebra.
