Las relaciones entre industrialización y desarrollo son complejas, pero pueden sintetizarse en el hecho de que la industria es la portadora por excelencia de las transformaciones que el avance de la ciencia y la tecnología incorpora en la actividad económica y social. La industria no es sólo un conjunto de fábricas: implica el desarrollo de sectores sociales, instituciones y políticas, así como reconfiguraciones del espacio que afectan la dinámica de una sociedad. La industrialización en América Latina, cuestión apasionante y objeto de continua controversia, se presenta aquí a través de una revisión historiográfica de los avances en las investigaciones sobre industrias y procesos en seis países del área: Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, México y Uruguay.
