Este libro trata de la historia de esta lengua en América entre los siglos xvi y xix: cómo llegó a través del mar y cómo este, junto con los barcos que hacían la travesía al llamado nuevo continente, configuró nuestros modos de hablar. Trata de cómo el español, solo o, las más de las veces, en contacto con numerosas lenguas amerindias, fue vehículo de comunicación de grandes contingentes humanos, hispanohablantes nativos y también no hispanohablantes, que construyeron sociedades, culturas y modos de entender el mundo, en suma, la vida toda, en lengua española y normaron su existencia mediante ella.
Hablar, como ya se sabe, es una actividad transversal y transdisciplinaria que permea y construye la vida diaria de cualquier ser humano. De los muchos modos de ejercer esa actividad transversal en este continente, de hablar y
de vivir en América, se ocupan los capítulos de este libro.
