Este estudio pone en consideración una amplia caracterización del fenómeno de las maras en el contexto guatemalteco, escudriñando en la naturaleza de su violencia. En este sentido, analiza la violencia juvenil y la relaciona con las problemáticas estructurales e institucionales de este país, considerando el legado de las dictaduras y del conflicto armado, así como la construcción de realidad social realizada por los agentes que reproducen el fenómeno. Esta obra se dirige a todos aquellos académicos, docentes e investigadores, estudiantes universitarios o cualquier persona interesada en comprender a fondo la problemática de las pandillas y las dificultades entrecruzadas de carácter político, económico y social que la propician y que permiten su evolución.
