Más que la historia institucional de aquel partido que Guzmán fundó como movimiento UDI en 1983, es el estudio de una cultura y una práctica militante que involucra a dicho partido, pero que también lo trasciende y antecede, pues compromete a otras instancias como el gremialismo universitario, las redes de un activismo comunal-poblacional, y todas aquellas vinculaciones sociales e institucionales (primero dictatoriales y luego posdictatoriales) que han acompañado hasta el día de hoy a este referente. Es la historia de aquella militancia que desde septiembre de 1973 buscó dirigir la orientación refundacional de la dictadura al tiempo que consolidar su propia identidad y proyecto como sector de una derecha emergente.
