El libro cubre la historia del movimiento sindical en los últimos 164 años. Incluye el análisis de las épocas de apoyo estatal al movimiento sindical y también de aquellas en que el Estado persiguió las luchas obreras y la acción huelguística.La intervención estatal siempre ha estado presente en el movimiento sindical y el trabajo trata de dilucidar cómo los cambios en la legislación laboral han influido en la estructura del movimiento sindical, su poder negociador, y su impacto sobre el desarrollo económico y el bienestar de los trabajadores. Finalmente, se ocupa del tamaño del movimiento a través del tiempo, definido como la relación entre personas sindicalizadas y con relación a la fuerza de trabajo. Se discuten las posibles causas de la caída en la densidad sindical, así definida en las primeras décadas del siglo XXI, y por qué el apoyo de la sociedad al movimiento sindical es una necesidad para el logro de mayor crecimiento económico, bienestar, justicia y equidad.
