Nacido en una pequeña aldea de montaña en el seno de una sencilla familia de comerciantes, Fierro no tuvo oportunidades de cursar más estudios que los elementales a los que se añadió una mínima formación mercantil. Así, con tan escasa formación, se lanzó a la creación de un grupo empresarial presente en prácticamente todos los sectores (desde la banca o el transporte hasta el de los fósforos o las artes gráficas, pasando por la construcción, el petróleo o la automoción).
