El presente libro se centra en la particular manera en la que estos dos personajes contactaron, concibieron y representaron a las sociedades nativas de la península de la Guajira, la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta y las llanuras del Ariguaní.Además de un profundo estudio analítico, la obra reúne sus más importantes trabajos, muchos de ellos inéditos en español y junto a las más de doscientas ilustraciones que los acompañan. En suma, es una sustanciosa contribución a los estudios sobre la historia del Caribe colombiano, la literatura de viajes, la empresa exploradora científica y las relaciones que entablaron las sociedades europeas con los pueblos indígenas a finales del siglo XIX.
