El diseño de las instalaciones de un edificio permite el suministro, la distribución y/o la evacuación de materia, energía o información, para el correcto funcionamiento del mismo. Gracias a ello, los edificios disponen de electricidad, gas, agua, y teléfono, y son capaces de eliminar los residuos y las aguas sucias que se producen en su interior, a través de equipos y redes. Para ello es necesario conocer e interpretar los conceptos, los símbolos y las convenciones que se utilizan en el dibujo arquitectónico, para representar y comprender los distintos planos que componen el proyecto, así como para su correcta realización. Asimismo, es necesario conocer las distintas normas para el cálculo y el dibujo de los distintos tipos de instalación.
