Este libro de Manuel Salas estudia el periodo de formación que vivió el padre Hurtado luego de su ingreso a la Compañía de Jesús siendo ya abogado. La fecundidad de su vida apostólica posterior y su apertura profética no se explican sin la formación recibida dentro de la Compañía. El pasó por diferentes países; los estudios de espiritualidad, de humanismo, de filosofía, de teología y pedagogía ampliaron su visión del cristianismo y del ser humano. Especialmente importante fue el periodo en Lovaina donde estudió Teología y obtuvo su doctorado en Pedagogía. Esa formación permitió que de regreso a Chile Alberto Hurtado fuese un golpe de aire fresco, de esperanza y de una nueva visión social.
