En Ser y tiempo Heidegger sostuvo que el existente humano está arrojado en el mundo. Al filósofo Xavier Zubiri (1898-1983) le pareció que no es así, sino que el ser humano está más bien religado a lo real y su realidad. Es que, para él, lo radical del vivir humano es la aprehensión y esta es, en todos sus diversos modos, mera actualización de realidad. Para mostrar esto publica, entre 1980 y 1983, los tres tomos de una voluminosa obra de más de mil páginas, Inteligencia sentiente, en la cual desarrolla un pormenorizado análisis del acto humano de aprehensión, que pretende ser mero análisis, es decir, mantenerse en los límites del acto mismo.
