En la tarde del 6 de octubre de 1934, Luis Companys, presidente de la Generalidad de Cataluña, proclamó el Estado catalán dentro de la Republica española; acto que coincidió con una huelga general revolucionaria declarada por Alianza Obrera y con una insurgencia social proletaria que se extendió por toda España y singularmente en Asturias. El alzamiento catalán fue sofocado en unas horas por el Ejército republicano con un doloroso saldo de muertos y heridos por ambas partes y posteriormente sus autores fueron condenados por un delito de rebelión militar. Estos sucesos han sido relatados y analizados minuciosamente por escritores catalanes; pero sorprendentemente faltaba una obra en castellano.
