El título La violencia y su sombra no es casual ni fortuito. Pretende establecer una diferencia entre las representaciones y descripciones explícitas de la violencia y las que abordan el problema de manera metafórica, o con miradas al sesgo.
Esta antología constituye un intento por trazar ciertos contornos en dos sociedades asoladas por la violencia y dar cuenta tanto de las singularidades de cada contexto como plantear preguntas sobre sus rasgos comunes. La larga tradición colombiana en este tema sirve para producir relatos e interpretaciones que dilucidan la historia reciente de México. Pero también las diferentes respuestas sociales ante la violencia actual que se vive en aquel país ofrecen materiales valiosos para los activismos y las academias colombianas. De este modo, se asume que ninguna sociedad puede producir respuestas definitivas ante las violencias que la afectan y que la tarea de comprender e interpretar es parte de las acciones encaminadas a buscar la paz y la reparación.
