La preocupación cada vez más extendida entre lingüistas y comunidades de distintas regiones por la rápida y creciente desaparición de lenguas en el mundo y por la inminente amenaza que se yergue sobre la diversidad lingüística y cultural, le otorga gran importancia al campo de la Lingüística de la Documentación. El objetivo principal de esta disciplina es preservar el patrimonio de cada lengua como sistema simbólico y expresivo único, para su uso por generaciones actuales y venideras, así como resguardar y difundir el conocimiento de cada cultura, y de contribuir a su valoración.
La primera parte de esta publicación reúne los aportes fundamentales de esta disciplina tras dos décadas de expansión, mientras que la segunda parte recopila experiencias desarrolladas por la Lingüística de la Documentación en América del Sur.
