En la frontera amazónica entre Colombia y Ecuador, comerciantes y religiosos lideraron el desarrollo, el éxito y el fracaso de los proyectos estatales durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. De igual modo, jugaron un papel clave en tanto incorporaron a la población indígena al difícil proceso de consolidación del Estado colombiano en el Putumayo.
Al tiempo que defendían sus intereses, estos actores tomaron parte en las disputas fronterizas con los países vecinos. Con su presencia y acciones, los tres grupos sostuvieron, de distintos modos, las pretensiones de Colombia en territorio amazónico.
Mediante el estudio de fuentes documentales inéditas, el autor ofrece una mirada renovada de la historia del Putumayo, superando las lecturas centradas en la “ausencia del estado” y en la extracción de la quina y el caucho.
