Tras una juventud movediza, Manuel Rojas en la madurez desarrolla radicalmente el oficio de la escritura. Entre sus obras destacan los libros de cuentos Hombres del sur y El delincuente (en el que aparece su célebre relato El vaso de leche), la novela Punta de rieles y varios libros de ensayos y viajes. Su obra fundamental está constituida por las cuatro novelas que protagoniza Aniceto Hevia, su álter ego. Esta tetralogía, titulada Tiempo irremediable en su reciente edición póstuma, comprende Hijo de ladrón tal vez la novela más importante del siglo XX chileno, Mejor que el vino, Sombras contra el muro y La oscura vida radiante. En 1957 se le otorga elPremio Nacional de Literatura. Fallece en Santiago, en marzo de 1973.
