Mediante los relatos de recuerdos, anécdotas, historias vividas los protagonistas de un pasado doloroso buscan reconstruir la figura del hermano desaparecido o del sobrino apropiado. Las entrevistas que sirvieron de materia a este libro tienen todas como punto en común el vínculo fraternal que une al sobreviviente y al ausente. Con ese objetivo, el libro rescata en primera instancia la centralidad de esa relación e indaga los aspectos de la vida familiar y las experiencias cotidianas que se vieron dramáticamente alteradas por la pérdida traumática. Luego, el análisis se traslada a los distintos contextos históricos para determinar las modalidades a través de las cuales se habilitó la escucha para el testimonio de los hermanos y en qué medida fueron considerados también (como los padres, hijos y cónyuges) como víctimas de la gran tragedia de nuestra historia reciente.
