Através de relatos sensibles y honestos este libro recoge las memorias de María Teresa Hinojosa, quien se destacó en el ámbito político de La Guajira durante la década de 1980, pero más que narrar las experiencias como concejala o alcaldesa en su natal San Juan del Cesar, la autora exalta las costumbres y valores de su departamento y comparte su visión de hechos históricos para la región. Esta autobiografía nos adentra en la cotidianidad de una mujer ingeniosa y valiente, que se aferró a sus convicciones para desafiar las vicisitudes de la vida —la muerte, el secuestro, la enfermedad— y sin proponérselo evidenció las formas que toma el machismo en el Caribe colombiano.
