El hombre moderno, aquel que a diferencia del héroe trágico, solo cuenta consigo mismo para entender las consecuencias de sus actos; ese hombre que no debe esperar a que al final de su recorrido vital, los dioses le muestren y le hagan comprender que el desenlace trágico ha sido producto de sus propias decisiones. En la primera parte del libro, el autor analiza desde el punto de vista de la sociología, los posibles significados de la idea de la modernidad y en la segunda parte, mediante la aplicación de conceptos sociológicos, plantea y examina un problema bastante intemporal: el poder.
