El proceso de modernización, como tantos otros, difícilmente pueda ser condensado en un sistema, persona o idea. Sin embargo, René Descartes es considerado, por su postulación del “pienso, luego soy una cosa que piensa”, como el que inició o consagró filosóficamente la episteme moderna: el individualismo del sujeto racional como fundamento de lo social. Pensador que fue guerrero, matemático y luego filósofo. Su educación religiosa no le impidió avanzar sobre los límites que la concepción cristiana le establecía; aunque cuando su sistema metafísico se encuentra en un callejón sin salida (el solipsismo), va acudir a Dios y hasta argumentos teológicos para poder salir del atolladero de la razón soberbia. Descartes, un moderno, un imprescindible. Con él o contra él aún se sigue discutiendo, por lo que es ese gigante sobre el que nunca podremos dejar de pararnos para mirar hacia el futuro.
