En esta obra de denuncia, Inés Echeverría no solo narra el drama del matrimonio de su hija Rebeca con Roberto Barceló Lira y el horroroso momento en que él la asesina de un balazo por la espalda, sino que se remite también, de manera ácida, al doble estándar de toda una sociedad. Una hipocresía que permitía al marido golpear a su esposa sin escándalo alguno, al tiempo que deudas y engaños sí llevaban a alzar el grito a los miembros de su clase. Una duplicidad que ponía al rico por sobre la ley y al pobre contra el paredón, que permitía golpes mudos y desfalcos ante la ceguera selectiva de la justicia y que hoy persiste, explícita y vergonzosa, en numerosos casos judiciales donde los poderosos eluden la ley gracias a las mismas redes de influencia que hacía un siglo pretendía utilizar Roberto Barceló.
