En la actualidad se plantean álgidas discusiones acerca del papel de la Educación General en las universidades y la necesidad de que estas profundicen en el desarrollo intelectual integral de los estudiantes, al menos en la etapa inicial de sus carreras. Frente a este debate entran en tensión dos componentes: la educación general y la educación especializada o profesional. Esta obra, dirigida a docentes e investigadores interesados en el diseño, planificación e implementación de programas de estudios generales (o educación básica) en las universidades de América Latina, contiene una serie de reflexiones que permiten valorar los esfuerzos que en diferentes universidades del continente se vienen realizando en torno a este tema de trascendental importancia.
