Sinopsis
El presente libro reivindica el legado del artista Jesús F. Contreras (Aguascalientes, 1866-1902), el máximo escultor mexicano de finales del siglo xix, particularmente con las obras calificadas por el maestro Marco Antonio García Robles como “las hermanas menores de la torre Eiffel”, las piezas de bronce que adornaron la fachada del ecléctico Palacio Azteca, erigido por el gobierno de Porfirio Díaz para promover a la República que deseaba ingresar en el concierto internacional de las naciones modernas, en el marco de la Exposición Universal de París de 1889.
Además del valor estético de los relieves, que fusionaron los códigos académico occidental e iconográfico mexica, fueron un eslabón importante en el desarrollo de la corriente nacionalista, en el auge del rescate histórico de lo prehispánico, además de que cumplieron exitosamente su cometido propagandístico.
La participación de Contreras en la construcción y decoración del pabellón mexicano, detonó su meteórica carrera, que culminó en el Gran Prix de Escultura de 1900 con su célebre mármol Malgré tout y la condecoración como caballero de la Legión de Honor de Francia.
