La escritura epistolar juega un papel fundamental en la reconstrucción de la memoria del exilio. Las cartas, lugar de intimidad y de distancia al mismo tiempo, ofrecen una vía de acceso a vivencias que no suelen entrar a formar parte de la historia oficial.
La primera carta de la correspondencia entre Enrique de Rivas y María Zambrano se remonta a 1959. Tras largos años de exilio en América, ambos habían decidido regresar a Europa y establecerse en Roma.
Precisamente en la capital italiana nació el diálogo afectivo e intelectual que atraviesa este epistolario: 136 cartas que los dos exiliados intercambiaron durante treinta años y que testimonian la historia de su duradera y sincera amistad, así como el origen y el desarrollo de proyectos filosóficos, literarios y poéticos. En estas páginas encontramos una constelación de nombres y figuras de la época, representantes de la España exiliada, intelectuales italianos y mexicanos, pero también lúcidos análisis sobre el exilio y la historia política y cultural del siglo xx.
Con auténtico gusto biográfico, Elena Trapanese reconstruye en el aparato crítico el contexto de los sucesos y reflexiones que protagonizan estas cartas, en su mayoría inéditas y ahora publicadas de forma integral.
Esta correspondencia nos recuerda que los infiernos no se pueden atravesar solos y que, como Dante Alighieri, hay que tener por lo menos un compañero de viaje, un ser querido a quien nos una el hilo de la amistad, capaz de guiarnos. Un hilo para no perdernos “a través de tantos laberintos”.
