Los estudios recientes en torno al mundo de los negocios, las redes comerciales y las corporaciones mercantiles de los siglos XVIII al XIX han caminado de la mano de una renovación historiográfica general que ha puesto mayor interés en el papel de los actores sociales. Con ello, el análisis relacional, la agencia de las corporaciones en la vida política y económica o la cultura de la mediación se han vuelto asuntos indispensables para quienes, desde la historia económica, buscan comprender la participación de los espacios americanos en la primera globalización de la economía del planeta y las transiciones sociales y políticas del Antiguo Régimen al mundo moderno.
Los trabajos que acompañan este libro constituyen aproximaciones metodológicas diversas de experimentados y jóvenes historiadores latinoamericanos y latinoamericanistas, en su intento por comprender las dinámicas de las redes de negocios, el funcionamiento de la administración colonial y los vínculos sociales que permitieron -o en su caso impidieron- el ejercicio del poder en regiones de la Nueva España, Río de La Plata o Cuba
