En la región norte del Distrito Federal se ubica uno de los asentamientos industriales más importantes del centro del país: la zona industrial de Vallejo. Desde su conformación en los años cincuenta del siglo XX, las empresas ahí establecidas, así como su contorno territorial, han sufrido importantes transformaciones influidas por factores como las crisis económicas y financieras, las mutaciones competitivas mundiales, las alteraciones urbanas y ambientales de la zona metropolitana de la ciudad de México, y la tendencia de la actividad económica capitalina hacia los giros comercial y de servicios. En fechas recientes, el Gobierno del Distrito Federal ha delineado propuestas de ordenamiento económico y urbano, plasmadas en el plan Vallejo: Distrito Industrial 2017, que procuran revitalizar la infraestructura y los servicios de dicha zona e impulsar las capacidades competitivas de las empresas del polígono industrial Vallejo, PICAL-Pantaco y espacios aledaños. Este libro presenta los resultados de una serie de estudios sobre las empresas localizadas en el Área Industrial de Azcapotzalco (ARIA), enfocándose particularmente en conocer sus actividades innovativas y determinar la forma en que su entorno social, productivo e institucional afecta sus condiciones competitivas. Se muestra que su dinamismo innovador es limitado y que la zona representa una estructura productiva, empresarial e institucional desarticulada, lo cual restringe seriamente las potencialidades para convertirla en un distrito industrial moderno, innovador y creador de conocimiento. La obra incluye el análisis de otras dos regiones del país, en los estados de Hidalgo y Jalisco, así como la revisión de los principales aspectos teórico-metodológicos en los que se basan los estudios que analizan la relación entre actividad económica, territorio y desarrollo productivo, línea de investigación en la que se suscriben los resultados aquí expuestos.
