El autor nos presenta seis rigurosos estudios sobre igual número de personajes que influyeron notablemente en la vida de sor Juana, aunque de diversa manera; mientras unos la alentaron a seguir sus inquietudes intelectuales y creadoras, otros intentaron fortalecer su vocación religiosa.
Esta obra incorpora textos poco conocidos relacionados con Juan de Guevara, Antonio Núñez de Miranda, Diego Calleja, Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz , Juan Ignacio de Castorena y Dorothy Schons, la primera sorjuanista. Tres de estos textos han sido rescatados por el Dr. Schmidhuber de la Mora, quien es también el editor moderno de dos más de ellos.
