El examen clínico de los animales comprende la semiología y la propedéutica veterinaria que se incluyen dentro del contexto de la clínica, y están soportadas en una metodología ordenada de exploración física, dependiente del saber y el quehacer médico veterinario. Está metodología incluye técnicas, métodos, instrumentos, teoría y procesos que favorecen la interpretación de las anormalidades de un paciente y de su entorno. La primera fase del médico veterinario es establecer un diagnóstico rápido y acertado y para ello se requiere obtener una serie de datos, que pueden ser proporcionados por el dueño del animal o el encargado del mismo; acompañados de los datos obtenidos del examen clínico, que descubre los síntomas presentes; por lo tanto, se debe seguir una metodología, tanto en el cuestionario que le realizan a quien maneja el animal, como en el examen físico del paciente. Así, el examen clínico de un animal se constituye en la columna básica para la buena práctica clínica de un método veterinario.
