El patrimonio cultural, en sus múltiples manifestaciones, es un tema que se incorpora en los planes de estudio de distintas disciplinas, entre ellas la de la arquitectura. Al adquirir importancia en dichos planes, se hace evidente la necesidad de aplicar aproximaciones pedagógicas específicas, en las que se incorporen contenidos de índole conceptual con aplicaciones prácticas para permitir, en primer lugar, la comprensión del asunto patrimonial, y por otra parte, el desarrollo de conocimientos para participar en la protección, conservación y activación de los bienes de interés cultural. El patrimonio cultural es un fragmento seleccionado del amplio universo de la memoria colectiva. La selección obedece -o debe obedecer- a criterios de calificación que permitan señalar en los bienes materiales e inmateriales los valores que deben protegerse, conservarse y activarse para incorporarlos al presente de sus comunidades o de la sociedad misma. Los bienes de interés cultural se localizan en varios campos: paisajes culturales, centros o sectores antiguos, bienes muebles e inmuebles, bienes documentales y patrimonio inmaterial.
