Recargado, proliferante, excesivo, vertido en el retruécano de sí mismo, el Barroco latinoamericano configura una paradójica identidad a la vez consititutiva y en resistencia frente a la dominación europea. Las producciones literarias, filosóficas, científicas, iconológicas que emergen en el suelo de la Nueva España y en general en el conjunto de los territorios coloniales de la Península Ibérica, fueron poco a poco dando lugar a un proyecto civilizatorio propio que apenas hoy vamos descubriendo en toda su magnitud y profundidad, y cuyo sentido podemos describir afirmando que se trató de una modernidad alternativa.
Los ensayos reunidos en este volumen, fruto de la confluencia de las más variadas disciplinas académicas, representan un magno esfuerzo para pensar la vigencia y retos del barroquismo como una verdadera opción para una vida diferente en nuestro tiempo. Tal vez el alter mundi afinque sus raíces en el Barroco.
