Los ensayos aquí recopilados tienen en común el punto de mira: la perspectiva crítica que explora el pensamiento contemporáneo justo en donde conectan política y cultura. La orientación principal de estas reflexiones ha sido, en algunos casos, revisar –revisitar– categorías bien establecidas en la crítica de la cultura (centro-periferia, o el tema del barroco) tratando de percibir de qué modo y en qué medida las mismas se sostienen en el contexto de debates actuales, tan diferentes de aquellos
en los que esas problemáticas surgieron. Al llevar a cabo esta revisión crítica, el campo conceptual que esos tópicos concitan se pone en movimiento. Se develan connotaciones no siempre explícitas o percibidas en esas construcciones críticas o metodológicas, las cuales fueron en su momento ampliamente utilizadas y cuyo uso, ahora más cuidadoso y matizado, sigue dando rendimiento teórico.
