Los conocimientos sobre los usos empíricos de las plantas se han transmitido durante generaciones por tradición oral. Este conocimiento es una parte importantísima de la identidad y personalidad cultural de cada pueblo. No obstante, el proceso de modernización y globalización ha uniformado muchas de las costumbres y modos de vida de los pueblos, provocando la pérdida de buena parte de la riqueza y diversidad cultural. Por lo anterior, urge recopilar todas estas sabidurías y tradiciones.
El estado de Aguascalientes se encuentra en la zona del centronorte de la República Mexicana y a pesar de su tamaño reducido y aparente homogeneidad, cuenta con una amplia diversidad de comunidades vegetales. La Sierra del Laurel es un Área Natural Protegida con la categoría de “Área Silvestre Estatal”, está ubicada al suroeste del Estado de Aguascalientes, abarca parte de los municipios de Calvillo, Aguascalientes y Jesús María, ocupa una superficie cerca de 30,000 hectáreas. La Sierra del Laurel cuenta principalmente con tres tipos de vegetación: bosque de encino, matorral subtropical (originado por la deforestación del bosque tropical bajo caducifolio para el cultivo de la guayaba) y pastizal inducido.
