Este libro fue elaborado entre 1997 y 1998, a pesar de haber transcurrido seis años la vigencia de sus datos y la importancia de su publicación se mantienen vigentes. Hasta ahora sigue representando un esfuerzo colectivo que culminó en un conjunto de investigaciones cuyos contenidos nos brindan el perfilde centrales, confederaciones y sindicatos que, hoy por hoy, representan y agrupan a una parte importante de los trabajadores sindicalizados del país. Realizar esta introducción representa una oportunidad de hacer un recuento de lo que planteaban las investigaciones que forman parte de este libro y, por otro lado, actualizarlo con algunos acontecimientos relevantes que sucedieron entre los días en que fue elaborado y los que vive el sindicalismo en la actualidad.
