Los diecisiete artículos de esta colección tienen en común la búsqueda del sentido que hay en las actuaciones de los hombres del pasado.
Desde los años de estudiante, en la decada de los cincuenta, fue preocupación del autor encontrar el sentido y el método para llegar a él. El primer testimonio es su trabajo de 1963 “Dos capas paleolíticas...” que, partiendo de un detallado conocimiento de la prehistoria europea, nos descubre dos diferentes edades historico-culturales de rasgos laográficos y etnográficos actuales en Mesoamerica.
Aplica su rigor metodológico en las investigaciones de los años siguientes y señala la conveniencia de tener clara conciencia de sí se está trabajando en el nivel de la -grafía (descripción) o en el de la -logía comparación y generalización).
Teniendo siempre presente los momentos historico-culturales, la comparación de lo que los humanos han hecho, o hacen, conduce a conclusiones enmarcadas en las labores de la historia de la cultura -que es el sitio en que profesionalmente podemos situar al etnólogo Juan A. Hasler
