En este libro se muestra que la realidad sólo sería comprendida en toda su complejidad si asumiéramos que sujeto y objeto se encuentran implicados uno en el otro, es decir, que son los lados de una misma realidad. Además, esta implicación entre sujeto (lector-escritor) y objeto (manuscrito o impreso) se realiza por la mediación de tecnologías de comunicación (oralidad, caligrafía, impreso, electrónico, digital, etc.), a cada una de las cuales corresponden, según el autor, distintas formas de producción, circulación y consumo de los saberes.
