La armonización jurídica de los Estados es una de las tareas pendientes del Derecho Internacional Privado. Frente a los clásicos instrumentos, como el Código de Bustamante y los acuerdos bilaterales y multilaterales; la ley modelo o propiamente las leyes modelo parecen ser la herramienta que encauza, en clave de unificación, materias controvertidas y complejas como la competencia judicial, el derecho aplicable, el reconocimiento y ejecución de resoluciones judiciales y, entre tantos otros, la cooperación internacional.Esta obra examina, en estos nuevos instrumentos, las principales materias objeto de armonización, no solo desde el avance del Derecho comparado, sino además desde la realidad colombiana, que, como señala Patricia Orejudo, Colombia es deficitaria de un sistema completo y coherente de normas de DIPr, muy a pesar de la reciente vigencia del Código General del Proceso y la Ley 1564 de 2012 que lo modifica, pero no lo mejora. Aún se precisa de un modelo regulador moderno, que neutralice las normas dispersas, inadecuadas y ancladas en ese viejo modelo monista de corte estatal
