La obra hace un aporte a la discusión sobre el papel que debe desempeñar la educación en el actual momento histórico del país. Las reflexiones que presenta se ubican en el marco de la relación entre educación y sociedad y muestran que la construcción de la paz en Colombia pasa por la educación, por el desarrollo territorial situado en las regiones y los pequeños municipios o por la construcción de otra ruralidad. Este es un texto de sociología de la educación de raigambre colombiana que proporciona una perspectiva futurista de la educación rural, la cual conjuga en su itinerario el desarrollo regional, la consolidación de la democracia y la formación de los ciudadanos rurales.
