En la cuenca río La Sabana-laguna de Tres Palos se han detectado las causas y emisiones del equivocado proceso de desarrollo caracterizado por la desigualdad en aspectos, como el crecimiento anárquico de las ciudades, la proliferación de asentamientos irregulares, el incremento progresivo en el déficit de infraestructura y la escasa capacidad de regulación y ordenamiento del territorio.
El crecimiento demográfico, la deforestación, las prácticas agrícolas insostenibles, el turismo y la urbanización sin planeación ejercen afectaciones significativas sobre los cuerpos de agua. Asimismo, el rápido crecimiento de la población urbana y la expansión física en las orillas de los cauces de ríos y arroyos han tenido impactos para la población y el medio ambiente.
