Este libro ofrece un análisis histórico amplio sobre el campo de producción editorial liderado por el intelectual colombiano Daniel Samper Ortega para la realización de la Selección Samper Ortega de Literatura Colombiana, colección literaria de 100 volúmenes de autores colombianos publicada entre 1928 y 1937. Por primera vez se hace una investigación de esta colección con base en la revisión de sus antecedentes bibliográficos, las intervenciones editoriales de su editor y las relaciones políticas, sociales y comerciales que mantuvo con la Editorial Minerva, el Estado colombiano y con autores, lectores, prensa local y librerías protagonistas en la “tomificación” de la literatura colombiana de los siglos xix y xx , “moda bastante moderna” en sus palabras. El autor recurre a los métodos del estudio del libro y la edición desde la coyuntura socioeconómica en su totalidad y a la observación detallada de los principales procesos y actores a través de los cuales se pensó y se leyó esta selección.
