Sinopsis
En el siglo XIX el dulce en México experimentó un proceso de intensificación y extensificación en el cual pasó de ser un bien inaccesible a formar parte de la dieta diaria de la aristocracia, consumido frecuentemente por la clase media, y por el pueblo bajo en ocasiones festivas. En este libro podemos hallar las voces de los pregoneros que vendían y anunciaban frutas cubiertas, caramelos y condumios, o a las mujeres devotas que salían a beber chocolate y bizcochos en compañía de sus amigas, o incluso las figuras de alfeñique que hacía toda una familia en Navidad. El dulce además fue el depositario de relaciones de poder, ya que el pueblo más pobre consumía charamuscas o bizcochos de maíz, comparados con los brillantes, relucientes y caros caramelos franceses o molletes exhibidos en los principales cafés y dulcerías de la Ciudad de México.
