En la obra se presentan doce estudios de caso que abordan una región compleja, el bajío central mexicano, aunque también se incluye un estudio situado en el estado de Jalisco. Los enfoques metodológicos son diversos, cuantitativos, cualitativos y mixtos; del mismo modo, las propuestas teóricas se presentan variadas y nutridas, desde disciplinas como la Sociología, la Psicología, la Antropología, la Economía y la Ciencia Política. El libro muestra un recorrido por las realidades actuales del mundo laboral en distintos sectores como el automotriz, el manufacturero y aeronáutico; la agroindustria y la industria electrónica. De igual forma sobresalen los estudios en el ámbito de la educación pública y tecnológica, el sector servicios e incluso el ámbito del trabajo doméstico y la inclusión laboral de personas con discapacidad. Un aspecto a resaltar de esta obra es que visibiliza los diversos rostros del trabajo, sobre todo el de jóvenes, mujeres y hombres, que son los actores centrales de las dinámicas laborales contemporáneas.
