Sinopsis
La presente obra constituye un esfuerzo por analizar y entender desde diversas vertientes –fundamentalmente a partir de la historia cultural– las representaciones religiosas y el discurso iconográfico que se asociaban al conjunto arquitectónico del templo del convento de San Agustín, erigido en la ciudad de San Luis Potosí a lo largo de los siglos XVII y XVIII. Así, junto con esta valoración histórica y estética del templo, se pretende analizar y explicar el indudable valor social y cultural enlazado a la mutable y longeva arquitectura de este conjunto edilicio. A través de su iconología religiosa, sus fachadas e interiores, así como de sus prácticas litúrgicas elaboradas por la Orden de San Agustín asentada en la ciudad de San Luis Potosí, el templo de San Agustín es capaz de proyectar un conjunto coherente y articulado de significados y códigos sociales inteligibles. Este fenómeno, que trasciende el mero marco estético y formal del templo del convento de San Agustín, constituye una de las mayores aportaciones de este libro; permite considerar que este conjunto edilicio posee un intrínseco valor estético, histórico y patrimonial no sólo por su fachada con reminiscencias manieristas de tres cuerpos y pilastras adosadas con nichos laterales que la secunda y su prodigiosa torre barroca, sino también por su longeva historia, que se vio enlazada a las continuas transformaciones que acaecieron en la entonces villa y posterior ciudad de San Luis Potosí, las cuales pueden ser consideradas como indicadores de cambios culturales más amplios.
