Los temas de la poesía son muchos, pero puede ser que los resortes que disparan los poemas no sean tantos: el amor, la naturaleza, otros poemas -y sus avatares o contrarios: el desamor, la ciudad, la barbarie. Si un poema de Rosario Castellanos dispara los versos de un poeta adolescente, es que la inspiración es contagiosa, lo mismo que la risa. Como los chistes, los poemas suelen darse en cascada; a uno sigue otro, y otro, y otro. Quien cuenta un chiste quiere que algo que lo divierte a él divierta también a la concurrencia; quien escribe un poema quiere que aquello que lo inspira inspire a los demás. Lo dice Riva Palacio en uno de sus Cuentos del general: "palabra saca palabra".
Este libro está hecho de esos contagios, de palabras sacadas de palabras. Sus poemas parten de lo que otros dijeron o contaron (los poetas de la Antología griega, Píndaro y Apolonio de Rodas, las historias de Heródoto, La leyenda áurea y El libro rojo, etc.), sin miedo a repetirlo, copiarlo o para frasearlo; sin miedo, ni siquiera, a "plagiarlo". Eso muestra bien su carácter: es un libro de lector.
