La mayoría de las personas que experimentan problemas de salud mental y sus familias encuentran barreras que dificultan su acceso a la educación, al mundo laboral, a una vivienda, incluso a disfrutar de los servicios sociales y de la salud. El estigma y la discriminación social asociada a los problemas de salud mental, en muchos casos, provocan exclusión y aislamiento social. De hecho, gran parte de las personas afectadas reconoce que ha sufrido más por el efecto del estigma y la discriminación que por la propia sintomatología de los trastornos.
