En esta historia de la edición, el libro y la lectura entre 1939 y 1975 intervienen, se cruzan y dialogan editores y autores, libreros y lectores, tipógrafos y encuadernadores, traductores y correctores, dibujantes y diseñadores gráficos, periodistas y reporteros, bibliotecarios y distribuidores, vendedores puerta a puerta y quiosqueros... Son muchos sus protagonistas, que dan lugar a un interminable catálogo de personas y empresas, muchas veces anónimos. En un momento en el que se han multiplicado las preguntas sobre el futuro del libro y la lectura en el contexto de profundos cambios tecnológicos y culturales, este libro explica cómo y por qué se editaron y difundieron libros, tebeos, periódicos y revistas en unas difíciles condiciones históricas marcadas por la dictadura del general Franco. Significando que esta obra no está dedicada sólo a las grandes editoriales, o a las que se hicieron grandes después, sino a todas, también a los editores sin historia y a los que se quedaron por el camino, a las experiencias excepcionales como las protagonizadas por mujeres editoras o por los editores en otras lenguas peninsulares, o los que trabajaron desde el exilio y a todos aquellos que prestaron su concurso a esta aventura colectiva a la que tanto debe la historia reciente de España.
